vancouver fashion week opening party

When I think of fashion and an opening party, I see images of classy, sexy and even sassy outfits. Unfortunately, with Vancouver Fashion Week’s opening party at Birks, I had the wrong image. Last night was full of bad outfits, semi-skank attire and a lot of media (almost more media than guests).

While the venue was gorgeous, the set up was lacking. First, a lack of music. How are you supposed to set the tone without some tunes? Hors d’oeuvres were not on the agenda, or wait, is that because people in fashion aren’t supposed to eat? The opening speech by major Sam Sullivan was boring at best. I think he actually said “blah, blah, blah, blah, blah” no joke.  It was also difficult to pick out which designer was which as their name tags merely said “Designer”.

In all fairness, the wine was free flowing and the gift bags cute. I did see some fantastic shoes on some of the ladies and of course a few nice outfits. I have to give a special shout out to two people who definitely steal the prize for fake fur. Ummm… the abomnimal snowman called, he wants his outfit back.

Perhaps we’re expecting too much from Vancouver, given it’s small scale, but I really do believe the event could have been kicked up a notch.  Especially if the City wants to get on the international fashion radar.

Okay, Vancouver, have a look at this link: Style and the City - Paris and London Fashion Weeks. I really hope the rest of Vancouver Fashion Week does not disappoint. I’ve pulled out my suitcase, just in case.
