Having two kids aged 1 and 4 at home makes it regular carpet cleaning a rite of passage. Not that they are necessarily dirty children that spill all over the carpet but, we like it or not, kids are clumsy.
Now, toddlers can be messy. My two winning strategies are covering danger areas and teaching my toddler to stay off the carpet with food. But let me share with you what are other tips that have worked for me that keep my carpet clean despite having kids at home.
Regular carpet cleaning
Yes, I know what you are thinking, more work. But the truth is that carpeting floors themselves require some extra effort on our side. Some regular vacuuming is actually necessary nonetheless. I vacuum my carpets twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Obviously, if there is a spill of food or something (very rarely, thank you very much!), I clean it immediately. But sometimes the mess is more than meets the eye.
Vacuuming periodically helps me get rid of any remainder of food that I could have overseen. So, the vacuuming just comes with the carpet. I actually consider it an advantage that I also get to remove any left behind or hard to spot debris.
Educate your children
This is probably the most important piece of advice I can provide. It is a part of our job as parents to guide them through the right path. Well, right now the correct path is away from the carpet when they are eating. If my kids are going to eat fruit, I sit them on the backyard benches. Just imagine them gobbling over a slice of watermelon.
My kids know that when it comes to food, they are not allowed to eat anywhere near the carpet. There are no carpets in the dining room and they do not bring popcorn to the TV room to watch a movie. Sorry, kids.
Protect areas in danger
I still use a food tray for the youngest. Those of you who are toddler moms know the level of disaster that ensues when kids are learning to eat by themselves. I know I said I do not let them bring food to the carpet, but sometimes I have to keep the youngest in check, therefore, need to bring him to the carpet.
Regardless of the snack he is eating, I still put some old newspaper around. You know, just in case.
