We’ve had our outdoor patio for many years now and feeling the desire to start a new DIY project we decided to make our patio the focus point. Just typing in ‘patio ideas’ into a google search churns up an almost unlimited amount of ideas and innovations for DIY or professional renovations. No matter what your style or taste there’s something out there for everyone. Some are based entirely on adding comfort and style, others can be a money saver while others still can provide the best of both.
Before beginning any project, start with a bit of brainstorming to come up with useful ideas. There is a lot of information out there in this niche so it helps you have a basic idea of your needs and desires. Start with just a simple sheet of paper, a pencil and begin a little scrolling through the web in search of information. Pinterest is a great place to start for finding ideas. Blogs can go into further detail and allow you to decide whether it’s something you can do yourself or something you should hire professional contractors for, for instance, not everyone will feel entirely comfortable with starting a project like an outdoor fireplace.
After some of my own research, I was left with plenty of ideas. I knew I wanted to make our patio a more cosy environment that would bring people together, I also wanted to find ways to cut back on utility bills. The final plan and results achieved both.
What we went for
We started with some minor aesthetic improvements. Some of these projects will take a little more planning and preparation but once finished can transform your entire patio.
- A Seating Wall – while a stone seating wall may not look that comfortable a few fluffy cushions can take care of that. This project involved building our own retaining wall which thankfully we had some experience of in the past. This is definitely worth the time and effort if you feel up to it
- Hanging lights – you’d be surprised by how much difference a few nicely chose lights can make. This is one of the easiest things to do and only takes a trip to a department store and bit of time installing
- New deck chairs and seating – another easy thing to start with. Such a trip to your local Ikea will take care of this. Combined with overhanging lights some new deck chairs and seating can change their entire ambience of your patio
- A retractable awning – not only good for providing some pleasant shade, a retractable awning can also cut your utility bills. During summer, direct heat on your windows can cause air-conditioning systems to work more to keep the same temperature. An awning cuts back on this and can be retracted in winter to let in more sunlight thus saving you on heating bills
The end result turned out great. Not only did we cut back on our energy bills we also revolutionized the look of our patio. This is very far from an exhaustive list but hopefully, it will give you an idea of what you can do and the little effort required with simple changes.
